ArchivalResource

Viaux family papers, 1870-1958.

Papers kept by several members of the Viaux family relating to their organizational affiliations. The largest section of the collection contains Frederic H. Viaux's records kept as secretary of the Association for the Relief of Suffering in France, a Boston organization founded to assist the French, occupied during the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-71. The records pertain primarily to a fair held in Boston in the spring of 1871 to raise money for relief and contain committee minutes, correspondence, records of tables and entertainment for the fair, the treasurer's report, and clippings. Other records kept by either Frederic or his wife Florence include membership records of the Boston Authors Club (1908-13) and correspondence of the Boston branch of the American Folk-Lore Society (1891-1924). The collection also includes a few organizational records presumably kept by Frederic B. Viaux, including poems written by the New England Poetry Club (1945-57).
